Ukrainians pause on the anniversary to commemorate revolutions in their past. On Monday, Zelenskyy visited a memorial in the capital, Kyiv, to those who fell. He told his people not to lose faith.

"It may be dark on our streets. It may be cold in our homes. There are many changes. But they have not changed the most important thing because the most important thing is not outside, but inside," Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainians have come under another onslaught of Russian missiles, nearly 400 in the Donetsk region on Sunday alone.

British intelligence analysts said Russian forces are constructing defensive positions in the city of Svatove, in the Luhansk region. But they said troops in the east have been hampered by "severe shortages of munitions and skilled personnel."
