Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is visiting North Korea for the first time in five years. He is expected to discuss military and economic cooperation with North Korean officials following last month's summit of their leaders. Russia's state-run news agency reported on Wednesday that Lavrov arrived in Pyongyang. He is making a two-day visit at the invitation of the North Korean Foreign Ministry. He last visited the country in May 2018. Lavrov is expected to meet North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and discuss details on expanding bilateral cooperation in the military and economic fields. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to enhance strategic cooperation between their countries during a meeting at a space center in Russia's Far East. North Korea later stressed that the leaders "reached a satisfactory agreement and consensus of views" on important issues. After returning home, Kim instructed officials to elevate his country's relations with Russia to a "new high level" in all fields. Kim's activities have not been reported in the past three weeks or so. But the North Korean leader could receive Lavrov himself, just as he did for defense minister Sergei Shoigu during his visit in July. The US government says North Korea has delivered more than 1,000 containers of ammunition and other military supplies to Russia since last month. Pyongyang has announced plans for a third attempt to launch a military reconnaissance satellite this month. Some observers say Russia may provide space technological support to North Korea which could help its development of ballistic missiles.
