Torrential rain is expected to hit western Japan and some areas along the Pacific coast in eastern Japan on Thursday and Friday. Weather officials are calling on people to remain alert for landslides and other disasters. The Meteorological Agency says a seasonal rain front is moving from the south to the north, and a low-pressure system will develop on the front on Thursday night. The front is being fed by warm, moist air and is expected to become active. Torrential rainfall and thunder are forecast for western Japan from Thursday through Friday, and areas on the Pacific coast in eastern Japan from late Thursday night to Friday. In the 24-hour period through Friday morning, rainfall of 200 millimeters is forecast in southern Kyushu and Shikoku, 180 millimeters in Kinki, 150 millimeters in Tokai and northern Kyushu and 120 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin and the Amami region. In the following 24-hour period through Saturday morning, rainfall of up to 150 millimeters is expected in southern Kyushu and Amami. Up to 100 millimeters of rain is forecast in Kanto-Koshin and Tokai. Rain is expected to intensify again in the areas hit by record rainfall last weekend. Even small amounts of rain can heighten the risk of mudslides. The Meteorological Agency is advising caution against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers. Officials are urging people to make necessary preparations before the rain intensifies and to listen to the latest weather and evacuation information. Tropical Storm Guchol is moving northwest at sea, east of the Philippines. The tropical storm is expected to increase in strength and move northward at sea, south of Japan, bringing violent winds. Guchol is expected to affect Japan early next week. Weather officials are calling on people to pay attention to the latest information about its course.
