A senior Ukrainian official in charge of agriculture has indicated that his country can learn lessons from the revival of farming in Japanese regions hit by the massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
A six-member delegation led by Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Markiyan Dmytrasevych visited the northeastern city of Sendai on Tuesday.
The officials saw restored farmland and an agricultural water drainage facility. They also spoke with farmers.
The farmers told the visitors about the difficulty in reviving agriculture as a local industry, saying that many went out of business immediately after the disaster.
The Ukrainian officials asked about government support and how the farmers' business has changed.
Ukraine is one of the world's top wheat producers.
But since Russia's invasion began, farmland and water facilities have come under attack.
Reviving the agricultural sector is a major challenge for the government.
Dmytrasevych told reporters that he is interested in how agricultural facilities in the disaster-hit areas have been restored.
He said he has the impression that advanced technology helped the areas recover, adding that the delegation learned key information about water systems and management.
