US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright says the nuclear weapons testing ordered by President Donald Trump will not involve nuclear explosions.
Trump announced during his trip to Asia last week that he had instructed the Department of Defense to resume the testing. But he did not give details.
The United States has not conducted a nuclear test explosion since 1992.
On Sunday Wright said during an appearance on a Fox News program: &quot;I think the tests we&#039;re talking about right now are system tests. These are not nuclear explosions.&quot;
He added the testing is aimed at developing &quot;sophisticated systems so that our replacement nuclear weapons are even better than the ones they were before.&quot;
An agency within the Department of Energy maintains and enhances the country&#039;s nuclear weapons stockpile.
After Trump&#039;s announcement, Russia said it will act accordingly if any country departs from the moratorium.
China called on the US to fulfill its obligations to non-proliferation.
Nihon Hidankyo, an organization representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War Two, has criticized Trump&#039;s announcement .
