In Thailand, where the general election is scheduled for next year, the largest opposition Pheu Thai Party, linked to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, unveiled its pledges at a general assembly, as well as its intentions for toppling the current government. Speaking to supporters, Thaksin's youngest daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, promised better livelihoods for everyone by 2027 through policies including doubling minimum wage and reducing energy prices. She said, "We will see our country bounce back and we will regain our dignity and pride." The 36-year-old has yet to be formally nominated as the party's prime ministerial candidate for the general election. But the latest poll shows she topped the list of preferred candidates. Paetongtarn's presence has drawn attention as her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, remains popular in Thailand. Thaksin fled the country after being toppled in a 2006 coup. But Pheu Thai party's populist policies have been widely criticized by ruling parties and private sectors. They say its policies will negatively impact foreign investment and force small and medium businesses to shut down.
