Cambodia's longest-serving prime minister has moved on to another key role in the country's power structure. The Senate met for its first session of 2024, electing former Prime Minister Hun Sen as its president.

The upper house president serves as acting head of state in the king's absence. After his election, Hun Sen vowed to fulfil his duties to the nation and its people.

He served as prime minister between 1985 and 2023. His ruling Cambodian People's Party's won an overwhelming victory in last year's general election.

He then handed power to his son, Hun Manet, who is now prime minister. The election was criticized by Western nations, as opposition parties were barred from running.

In February, Hun Manet's younger brother was appointed deputy prime minister, ensuring key government posts are held by members of Hun Sen's family.
