Cambodia's decades-long efforts to remove landmines have come under threat following the US decision to suspend all foreign aid. The director general of the Cambodian Mine Action Center said on Facebook that demining operations in some provinces have been halted since January 25. Heng Ratana said the suspension will continue for 85 days. He said Cambodia will seek continued assistance from the US for what he called the "noble humanitarian mission." US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order freezing all foreign aid for 90 days to review whether it aligns with the administration's America First priorities. Cambodian officials say Washington has been providing around 10 million dollars a year for the mine clearance program. It's estimated that between 4 to 6 million landmines were laid throughout Cambodia during its 20-year-long civil war. In addition, countless unexploded bombs dropped by American forces during the Vietnam War still litter the countryside. The deadly ordnance continues to cause injuries and deaths among local people.
