Iranian actress arrested for supporting protesters NHK

Iranian authorities have arrested a prominent Iranian actress for allegedly instigating anti-government riots.

Iranian state-run TV reported on Saturday that Taraneh Alidoosti was arrested on charges of spreading falsehoods about nationwide protests.

Alidoosti starred in "The Salesman," which won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2017.

She posted a photo of herself on social media holding a sign reading "Woman, Life, Freedom," a common slogan in the protests.

The anti-government demonstrations erupted in September after a woman died in police custody. She had been arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly.

On December 8, Iranian authorities made the first announcement of the execution of a protester.

Alidoosti posted a comment that "every international organization, who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity."

Local media say that concerned people from the movie industry have gathered in front of a facility of the justice authorities.

Alidoosti's supporters are calling for her release on social media.
