The Japanese government is considering holding a meeting of Group of Seven foreign ministers in Germany later this month to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began February 24 last year. Japan holds the G7 presidency this year. It plans to convene the foreign ministers on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, which takes place February 17 to 19. The G7 foreign ministers are expected to affirm the need to continue sanctions on Russia and support for Ukraine. The ministers met 11 times last year, including online, to discuss the situation in Ukraine. They held another online meeting last month, joined by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. In April, the ministers are scheduled to gather in Karuizawa, a resort town northwest of Tokyo. Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa hopes to affirm unity among his counterparts through the series of meetings in the run-up to the May G7 summit in Hiroshima.
