All Nippon Airways says it will purchase carbon dioxide removal credits from a US firm to diversify methods of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The Japanese carrier announced on Tuesday that it signed a contract with 1PointFive, which has technology to capture CO2 in the atmosphere and store it underground. The company plans to start commercial operation of the technology at its plant in Texas in 2025, and ANA will buy more than 30,000 tons of credits over a three-year period from that year. ANA says it has become the first airline in the world to sign a purchase agreement with 1PointFive for carbon dioxide removal credits. The airline emitted more than 12 million tons of CO2 in fiscal 2019. ANA has been introducing sustainable aviation fuel made from plants and waste oil that can reduce CO2 emissions. Major European aircraft maker Airbus has also signed a contract with 1PointFive to buy 400,000 tons of CO2 removal credits.
