Russia's defense ministry announced on Wednesday that the country's military destroyed 11 Ukrainian drones on the outskirts of the capital Moscow.
The ministry said Ukraine launched attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles on targets inside Russian territory.
In addition, it said Russian air defense systems destroyed another 34 drones in four other regions, including Bryansk in the west bordering Ukraine, and Kaluga, which neighbors Moscow.
There are no reports of damage. But Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said it was one of the largest ever attempts to attack the capital using drones.
Russia has repeatedly been targeted in drone attacks since it launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The defense ministry announced on August 14 that the country had intercepted 117 drones overnight.
Attacks on Moscow have also been carried out a number of times. Last month, an unmanned vehicle was downed over the Moscow region while drones crashed into a business complex in the capital in July and August last year.
Following a drone attack apparently targeting the Kremlin in May last year, Russia accused Ukraine of taking aim at the Russian president. But Ukraine denied any involvement.
