Japan's weather officials say bands of clouds are bringing downpours across wide parts of the country. Heavy rain swamped cities in the western prefecture of Wakayama on Friday. Two people are missing there, one was swept away when a road flooded, the other washed away by a river. Municipalities in the prefecture have issued the highest emergency alert for some areas near rivers. The level-5 evacuation warning advises people to move to higher ground and stay away from slopes. Similar weather patterns have caused deadly flooding and landslides in the past. In 2018, more than 200 people were killed in western Japan. Central Japan Railway Company says it suspended Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya stations due to the rain. Airline companies have either canceled or plan to cancel more than 260 flights across the nation.
