UN refugee chief urge nations to overcome differences to end Gaza hostilities NHK

The head of the UN refugee agency has called for countries to overcome their differences and work together to end the conflict in Gaza.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi was speaking with students at Tsukuba University in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Friday.

Grandi was the Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees until 2014.

He said what's happening in Gaza reflects the reality that countries fail to take a united stand and find themselves in conflicts with each other.

Asked about his view on Japan's refugee policy, Grandi said Japan has been helping poor nations and that he hopes it continues its humanitarian assistance.

One of the students was an evacuee from Ukraine.

He said the issue of refugees is important for any country, and that he is glad the participants had a good discussion.
