On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his ASEAN counterparts Beijing is ready to work with the bloc to crack down on the crime rings. Chinese are among the hundreds of thousands of people the UN estimates have been kidnapped and forced to work in scam farms in Southeast Asia.
The area on the Thai-Myanmar border has been wracked with instability since the military coup four years ago.
In early January, a Chinese actor was rescued in Myanmar after disappearing in the Thai border city of Mae Sot. Chinese media quoted him as saying he was forced to train as a scammer, along with at least 50 other abducted people.
The Japanese Embassy in Yangon is trying to confirm a report from a Thai civic group that Japanese are among those press-ganged to work in the scam centers.
