An opinion poll in Russia has indicated that public support remains high for its invasion of Ukraine. The government-affiliated Russian Public Opinion Research Center released the results of the survey of 1,600 people on Thursday. It was carried out from late January to early February, about a month before the third anniversary of the start of the invasion. Moscow calls it a "special military operation." The survey shows that 67 percent of respondents expressed support for the decision to launch the operation. That was almost the same as the previous three years -- 65 percent in 2022 and 68 percent in 2023 and 2024. The survey also shows that 65 percent believed the operation is likely to be successful, the same as last year. In 2022, 70 percent felt that way, but the number fell to 59 percent in 2023. An official at the research center said the Russian public is now seeking a successful early end of the operation on terms favorable to their country. But the official added that discontent and anger among Russian citizens will rise if situations undesirable for their country continue. The official said these include Ukrainian military strikes in Russia's western region of Kursk and missile attacks on important industrial and infrastructure facilities inside Russia. The deterioration of the country's socio-economic situation is another factor.
