Monday marks one year since Israel and Hamas entered into their current round of fighting in the Gaza Strip. The death toll in the enclave has topped 41,000, with a grave humanitarian crisis continuing and ceasefire talks stalled.
                
Combatants of the Palestinian group mounted large-scale surprise assaults on Israel on October 7 last year, leaving about 1,200 people dead and taking 251 others hostage. The militants are still holding 101 of them in captivity.
                
The Israeli military has been pounding Gaza to destroy Hamas and secure the release of the remaining hostages. It says its forces have dismantled Hamas units in southern parts of Gaza.
                
The Israeli military resumed its ground operations in Jabalia in northern Gaza on Sunday, saying the attacks were aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping.
                
Health officials in Gaza said on Sunday that 41,870 people had died in the territory since the start of the hostilities.
                
Roughly 1.9 million people, or 90 percent of the entire population of Gaza, are estimated to have been displaced. The humanitarian situation in the enclave remains dire amid shortages of food and water and worsening public health conditions.
                
Ceasefire negotiations have been gridlocked due to wide rifts between Israel and Hamas. Sticking points include whether Israeli forces will stay in southern Gaza areas bordering Egypt and under what conditions Israel will free Palestinians from its prisons.
                
The Israeli military has also been locked in battles against the Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group Hezbollah.
                
People in Gaza are worried that international attention to their plight is ebbing.
                
An evacuee in Khan Younis in southern Gaza said global eyes are shifting to the situation in Lebanon, with media giving less coverage to people in Gaza.
                
Another man in Gaza said people in the territory desperately want a ceasefire as they have already been exhausted and pushed to the limit.
