Russian lawmakers have adopted a bill to rename the country's September 3 commemoration day the day of victory over "militaristic Japan" and the end of World War Two.
Russia's lower house of parliament, or State Duma, on Tuesday passed the bill that was submitted in June of last year. The anniversary is currently called the day of the end of World War Two.
The authors of the bill explained that Japan unleashed an unprecedented "unfriendly campaign" against Russia in coordination with the West. They mentioned Japan's sanctions against Russia, including those against government officials. They also noted that Japan has frozen the Russian central bank's assets.
The authors say the renaming of the day is one of the responses to what they call Japan's unfriendly actions.
The bill is expected to be made into law after it is approved by the upper house and signed by President Vladimir Putin.
Putin's government has designated Japan as an "unfriendly" country, along with the United States and the European nations that have ramped up sanctions against Russia in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
Moscow is also strongly opposed to Tokyo's support for Kyiv.
