Sake-brewing is time-honored industry in the region in central Japan hit by the earthquake on New Year's Day. But damage from the quake has shut down production at many breweries. The temblor flattened a wooden two-level storehouse and damaged brewing tanks and other equipment at a factory in the town of Fugeshi in Wajima. The Ishikawa Sake Brewers Association says 11 member businesses are located in the hardest-hit region. All of them have told the group they can no longer produce sake due to damaged storehouses and retail outlets.
