The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization says the United States has been fully reinstated as a member of the body following a five-year absence. UNESCO announced on Tuesday that the US completed the necessary procedures and officially returned to the organization on July 10. In 2017, then-US President Donald Trump decided to pull his country out of UNESCO. He accused the organization of being biased against Israel. The withdrawal took effect in 2018. After President Joe Biden's administration expressed its intention to return to UNESCO, member states voted at an extraordinary session in Paris last month to allow the US to rejoin. Previously, US contributions accounted for more than 20 percent of UNESCO's total budget. UNESCO welcomed the United States' return, stating, "This is a historic moment. Our organization is once again moving towards universality." It added, "UNESCO will also have more resources for its two strategic priorities, Africa and gender equality." In addition to UNESCO, the Biden administration has rejoined a number of international entities that the US left under former President Trump, including the Paris Agreement on climate change.
