The United States and South Korea have agreed to draw up joint guidelines on nuclear strategy in a bid to deter North Korea's nuclear threat.
Representatives of the US-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group met at the Pentagon on Friday. The group discusses issues, including the sharing of information regarding the operation of nuclear forces.
After the meeting, South Korea's Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo told reporters the two sides agreed to complete guidelines regarding the planning and operation of a nuclear strategy by the middle of next year.
Kim said the guidelines will cover a wide range of issues concerning the sharing of nuclear-related information, the formulation and consultation procedures for a nuclear crisis and the operation of a real-time communication channel between the leaders of the two countries.
He also said the two sides agreed to include nuclear operation exercises in next year's joint military drills.
A statement released by South Korea after the talks said that any North Korean nuclear attack against the US and its allies would be unacceptable and would result in the end of the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
