Russia's military has launched a massive attack across Ukraine, killing 33 people. A children's hospital in Kyiv was heavily damaged in the strike.

Areas including Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and the eastern regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk were hit hard on Monday.

In Kyiv, apartment buildings and other structures were struck with missiles across seven districts of the city's center. Officials say 22 people there were killed and more than 70 others injured.

The Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv also came under attack. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the strike left two people dead and 10 others injured.

Ukrainian security authorities denounced Russia for hitting the hospital with a cruise missile.

A doctor who was there at the time of the attack told NHK that he heard a loud explosion and broken window glass almost fell right on him. He said his fellow doctor died, and that the attack was a huge criminal act.

Russia's defense ministry said in a statement it published on social media on Monday that Russian forces struck Ukrainian military industry facilities and air bases with long-range precision weapons. The ministry added that this was in response to Ukraine's attempts to attack energy facilities inside Russia.

Ukraine's air force said it intercepted 30 of the 38 Russian missiles launched.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media that "the entire world must use all its determination to finally put an end to the Russian strikes."
