The exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama, has issued a statement following a powerful earthquake in China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
He said the quake "caused the tragic loss of many lives, numerous injuries."
He also said, "I offer my prayers for those who have lost their lives and extend my wishes for a swift recovery to all who have been injured."
The Dalai Lama has been living in northern India since fleeing the Chinese government's crackdown on Tibet.
Beijing regards him as a "separatist" trying to split the region from China. But he continues to provide spiritual support for people in Tibet.
