The United Nations says over 5,300 civilians have been killed in Myanmar since the coup three years ago. It adds the military is ramping up arrests, as it escalates its efforts to crack down on opposition.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights released a report on Tuesday about the latest situation in the country.

The document says about 27,000 people have been arrested since the coup. It also says many have been sent to military training or detention centers.

The report reveals that arrests have increased since the military announced conscription in February.

It includes testimony of people describing the various methods of torture they were subjected to while detained, including being suspended from the ceiling without food or water and being beaten with iron poles or bamboo sticks.

James Rodehaver, the head of the Commission's Myanmar Team, said the situation is deteriorating due to violence and armed conflict. He added there have been massive regressions in human rights provoked by a vacuum in the rule of law.

High Commissioner Volker Turk reiterated the UN's call "for an end to the violence and for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arbitrarily detained."
