NATO forces conduct live-fire drills in Poland NHK

NATO forces have conducted drills at a base in northeastern Poland, near a strategic region in Eastern Europe.

The drills involving US, British and other service members were shown to NHK and other media outlets on Wednesday.

The US military says the drills were held based on a scenario that British forces would launch an attack on the enemy, followed by a lethal attack by a US tank unit.

The Polish base houses a multinational unit of NATO. It is located near the Suwalki Gap, an approximately 100-kilometer-long corridor between Poland and Lithuania, one of the three Baltic states belonging to NATO.

The corridor is also sandwiched between Russia's exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, a Russian ally.

A US commander said that having the multinational unit together in the area will further strengthen NATO forces, adding that preparations are underway for scenarios that assume all kinds of enemy invasions.
