Tokyo police have arrested a former MUFG Bank employee on suspicion of stealing gold bullion worth over 1.6 million dollars from customers' safe-deposit boxes.
Police detained 46-year-old Imamura Yukari Tuesday in connection with the thefts. She has admitted to the charges. The megabank previously reported that items worth more than 6.5 million dollars were stolen from boxes at the bank.
Police said Imamura used spare keys to access about 20 kilograms of gold bullion held by two customers at a branch in Nerima, Tokyo, in September last year.
They said Imamura traded the precious metal for 260 million yen, or about 1.65 million dollars, at pawnshops and other places. Police said she appears to have used the money for investments. They plan to investigate further how she spent the money.
Last month, MUFG Bank President and CEO Hanzawa Junichi apologized for the thefts. He said there were problems with how the spare keys were stored.
