US officials on Thursday condemned in the "strongest terms" the detention of a Wall Street Journal reporter in Russia. The reporter, Evan Gershkovich, was detained by Russia's security service for allegedly collecting information about a "state secret" linked to the military. Authorities said they caught him "red-handed." He faces up to 20 years in prison. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, "Under the cover of journalistic activity, with a press visa and accreditation, this person was involved in a completely different kind of activity, judging by his actions." White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre criticized the detention. She said, "These espionage charges are ridiculous. The targeting of American citizens by the Russian government is unacceptable." She added that the White House is in touch with staff at the Wall Street Journal, who deny the allegations against their correspondent. Officials at the US State Department said they have contacted Russian authorities to get access to Gershkovich and check on his welfare.
