A federal district court in the United States has ordered President Donald Trump's administration to reverse its partial freeze on grants to Harvard University, ruling it illegal. Trump has been urging universities where huge anti-Israeli demonstrations were held, or those that promote diversity, equity and inclusion programs, to follow his administration's policies. He has been putting pressure on them by cutting their federal grants and by other means. Harvard, the oldest university in the US, has produced many prominent researchers as well as political and business leaders. The school filed a lawsuit with a district court in the eastern state of Massachusetts in April, claiming the administration's partial freeze on research funding is illegal and asking that it be overturned. On Wednesday, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration's demands for changes in personnel and entrance exams at Harvard have almost nothing to do with antisemitism, but are deeply linked to the administration's power and political views. The judge ordered that the freeze on more than 2 billion dollars in federal grants to Harvard be reversed. The White House plans to appeal immediately. The Trump administration has also restricted Harvard's acceptance of foreign students. The latest court ruling could impact negotiations toward reconciliation between the two sides. ---------------- Quiz 1: Who was ordered by a federal district court to reverse its partial freeze on grants to Harvard University?
