A large military parade has taken place in Myanmar. But the usual heavy weapons and tanks were notable for their absence. More than 7,700 troops marched on Wednesday in the capital Naypyitaw to mark Armed Forces Day. The Junta is engaged in a fierce battle with ethnic militants and pro-democracy forces, and some observers suggest the lack of firepower at the parade extends to the battlefield. Attaches from countries including Russia and China also took part. The junta's top general gave a speech. Min Aung Hlaing described Myanmar's pro-democracy forces as terrorists. He also reaffirmed that military service will become mandatory for young people as early as April. Military officials announced the plan in February, prompting many youngsters to flee across the border or join Myanmar's pro-democracy forces.
