Dozens of politicians have registered as candidates to succeed Ebrahim Raisi as Iranian president in this month's election.

Iran's interior ministry said 80 people filed their candidacy before the deadline on Monday for the June 28 election, which was called after Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19.

Iran's parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who once belonged to the Revolutionary Guard, is among those who registered. Qalibaf is one of Iran's hardline conservatives inclined toward confrontation with the West.

The other candidates include moderates, who are open to dialogue with the West, and reformists, such as former parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani and former first vice-president Eashaq Jahagiri.

Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is popular among the impoverished class of the country, also signed up to run in the election.

A final candidate list is expected next Tuesday, after the applicants are vetted by the Guardian Council, which consists of Islamic jurists and other members appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In the run-up to the 2021 presidential poll, prominent moderates and reformist figures were disqualified in pre-election screening.
