Japan and the United States have agreed to start work on developing next-generation nuclear reactors.

It's part of joint efforts to strengthen energy security and promote decarbonization.

Japan's industry minister Nishimura Yasutoshi met US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in Washington.

Nishimura said, "With this agreement, the two countries will explore opportunities for cooperation in the development and construction of next-generation reactors, making the most of existing reactors, and building strong supply chains."

In a joint statement, the two sides said they will work together to develop and build next-generation reactors, including advanced light water reactors.
They have also agreed to try to maximize the use of their existing reactors, and establish robust supply chains for uranium fuel and nuclear components.

In December, the Japanese government hammered out new guidelines on nuclear power generation. They included development of next-generation reactors to replace decommissioned ones.
