Record cold wave in US kills at least 30 NHK

A record cold wave has been bringing heavy snowfall to the eastern United States and many other parts of the country since last week.

Weather officials are urging people to avoid going outside, citing the life-threatening cold weather.

A blizzard dropped a meter of snow on Buffalo, New York, making roads impassable and stranding people in their vehicles on Sunday. Twelve deaths linked to the cold wave have been reported in the state so far.

Some US news outlets say the prolonged winter storm has killed at least 30 people in eight states, including the Midwestern state of Ohio, Kentucky in the southeast and Colorado in the west.

The storm is having a huge impact on travelers as well as on people's daily lives during the Christmas holiday season.

US media say snow forced the cancellation of at least 3,400 flights on Saturday and more than 2,000 on Sunday.
