The opening ceremony for an exhibition on this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Nihon Hidankyo, was held in Norway's capital Oslo on Wednesday. Nihon Hidankyo is a Japanese group representing atomic bomb survivors, or hibakusha. Every year, an exhibition focusing on the latest peace prize recipient is held at the Nobel Peace Center. Attendees at this year's opening ceremony included survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Joergen Frydnes. Nihon Hidankyo Co-chairperson Tanaka Terumi said people cannot make efforts to abolish nuclear weapons unless they actually "see, hear, think about and take into their heart the devastation they cause". He said there needs to be a place where people can get a sense of the destruction the weapons can wreak, and the most important thing is to listen to the voices of hibakusha. Tanaka and the two other Nihon Hidankyo co-chairpersons were each presented with a piece of a wooden installation themed on atomic bomb survivors' testimonies. The work was created by the Japanese architect Kuma Kengo. The co-chairpersons then declared the event open. The exhibition will run from Thursday through November next year.
