Canadians are voting in a general election on Monday. Attention is focused on whether the ruling Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney can stay in power, while Canada faces high tariffs and other threats from US President Donald Trump. Carney dissolved the Lower House of parliament in March. The dominant issue is how to deal with the United States. Relations between the neighbors have worsened since the tariffs were announced and Trump started making public comments suggesting Canada should become the US's 51st state. Carney hit back with retaliatory tariffs on the United States and other measures. He has stressed that his experience as a former governor of Canada's central bank and the Bank of England make him well qualified to deal with Trump. The largest opposition Conservative Party claims that the Liberals' policies have worsened Canada's economy, whose problems include soaring housing prices. It says it will push the Trump administration to abolish the tariff measures. Public opinion polls by Canada's public broadcaster CBC showed the Liberals were behind the Conservatives by more than 20 percentage points early this year. But they gained the lead last month after Carney took office. Canadian media outlets report the Liberals may achieve an outright majority. But the gap between the two parties was closing in the campaign's final stage.
