Japan considering sending SDF aircraft to support evacuation from Israel NHK

Japan is considering deploying Self-Defense Force aircraft, in addition to a chartered plane, to facilitate the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Israel.

The government is making arrangements for the chartered flight amid the intensifying conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The plane is scheduled to leave the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Saturday and head to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The government is also considering sending SDF aircraft to the northeastern African country of Djibouti as a backup measure in case the operation of the chartered flight encounters any obstacles.

If the arrangement proceeds without any problem, the Foreign Ministry will make a formal request to the Defense Ministry to prepare for deployment.

Government officials say they have so far received no reports of fatalities or physical harm to Japanese citizens.

The government hopes to continue its efforts to ensure their safety through cooperation with relevant countries and organizations.
