Tokyu department store in Tokyo's Shibuya closes after 55 years NHK

The main outlet of Tokyu Department Store Company in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward closed for good on Tuesday after 55 years in business due to a redevelopment project.

The store, which opened in 1967, and the adjacent Bunkamura cultural complex, which opened in 1989, have been recognized as a center of cutting-edge culture and fashion in Shibuya.

Many customers visited the store for a closing sale on the final day.

A woman in her 60s said she has been shopping at the store with her friends since her school days. She added that she wants to thank it for the memories.

At 7 p.m. when doors closed, employees of the store lined up at the entrance and thanked customers.

A new 36-story complex with four underground floors is to be completed at the site in fiscal 2027, with shops on lower floors, a high-end hotel in the middle and apartments on upper floors.
