Japan's Princess Kako, who is on an official trip to Greece, has paid a courtesy call on President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. She is the second daughter of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino. Princess Kako, wearing a kimono, visited the presidential office in Athens on Tuesday. The president said she hopes the two countries will further strengthen bilateral ties, taking the opportunity of the 125 years of diplomatic relations and the "Year of Culture and Tourism" between Greece and Japan. Princess Kako said she is grateful for the warm welcome from the Greek people. The previous day, the Princess visited a convent built in the 17th century on Salamina Island near the capital. She was welcomed with a shower of flower petals by women clad in the island's traditional attire. The murals of the nunnery were restored in a joint project by Japanese and Greek researchers. Princess Kako commented that the ceiling-high murals look extensive and precise. Kyoritsu Women's University Professor Emeritus Kido Masako, who led the restoration project, said the Princess seemed impressed. Kido quoted the Princess as saying that she can imagine how people were pleased to see the results of the work. Princess Kako is scheduled to visit an island in the northwest from Wednesday to attend a ceremony to mark the 125 years of ties, as well as other events.
