The US government says it will put on hold 25-percent tariffs and other sanctions it planned to slap on Colombia after the country agreed to the unrestricted acceptance of undocumented immigrants sent back from the United States. The White House made the announcement in a statement Sunday night. The two countries will avoid a tariff war for now. The dispute erupted when the administration of US President Donald Trump tried to deport undocumented immigrants via two military planes, and Colombia on Sunday rejected their landing in the country. Trump announced the tariffs in retaliation, and Colombia then instructed ministers to raise tariffs on US imports. The White House statement said Colombia has now agreed to all of Trump's terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens returned from the US without limitation or delay. It also said orders imposing the tariffs and financial sanctions will be held in reserve, and not signed, unless Colombia fails to honor the agreement. Colombia's foreign ministry has not released details of the agreement, but says Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and other officials will visit the US soon to confirm the terms. The ministry also says the government will provide its presidential plane for the return of Colombians who were set to be deported from the US on military aircraft.
