Palestinian ambassador: veto on UN ceasefire resolution 'disastrous' NHK

After the US vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour termed the result "disastrous."

He accused the security council of not being able to carry out its responsibility in the face of a serious crisis which threatens peace and security in the region as well as that of the whole international community.

He stressed that it was a sad day in the history of the security council and that the outcome of the vote is not acceptable.

Mansour added that they will continue their effort to stop what he called a hideous act of brutality.

Russian deputy ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy said it was not too much to say it was one of the darkest days in the history of the Middle East.

He accused the US of condemning thousands more civilians in Palestine and Israel to death along with the UN workers who are trying to help them.

Japan's ambassador to the UN Ishikane Kimihiro said that Japan supported the resolution draft as it is a tragedy that civilian lives are being lost, be they Palestinian or Israeli.

He added that Japan takes very seriously the invoking of Article 99 of the UN Charter by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and it is regrettable the resolution was not adopted.

Ishikane, at the same time, expressed disappointment with Russia, which accused the United States of preventing a ceasefire.

He pointed out that what is needed is not blaming each other over responsibility but tireless efforts to find common ground for the security council to cooperate.
