US President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the renaming on January 20, his first day in office. The US government announced the change on January 24.

Google posted on X on Monday that the company has a "longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources."

It said Google Maps in the US will reflect updates made in the Geographic Names Information System.

Users of the app in Mexico will continue to see the name Gulf of Mexico. Those in other countries will see both names.

The US government has also announced that the highest peak in North America, Denali in Alaska, will be renamed Mount McKinley.
