Xi visits Cambodia on last stop of Southeast Asia tour NHK

Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited Cambodia, the last stop on his diplomatic tour of three Southeast Asian nations.
Xi arrived in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on Thursday. He previously visited Vietnam and Malaysia.

The Chinese leader met with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who served as the country's leader for nearly four decades. Xi also plans to meet Prime Minister Hun Manet, who is Hun Sen's son.

Ahead of his arrival, Xi urged Phnom Penh to "resolutely oppose any efforts by external forces" that "undermine the China-Cambodia friendship."
Xi's diplomatic tour in the region comes amid Beijing's intensifying trade friction with the United States.
China is apparently aiming to counter the US by stressing cooperation with Cambodia.
US President Donald Trump earlier this month slapped a 49% tariff rate on Cambodian goods, although he has suspended it.

China has been drawing closer to Cambodia. The country recently celebrated the completion of new facilities at Ream Naval Base that were built with financial support from Beijing.
