US President Joe Biden's administration has approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey after Ankara fully completed ratification of Sweden's NATO membership.
The Biden administration on Friday notified Congress of its approval to sell 40 F-16 fighter jets and related equipment to Turkey. The deal is worth 23 billion dollars.
Turkey has long sought to upgrade its F-16 fleet and had made its ratification of Sweden's NATO membership contingent on the approval of the sale of new planes.
The US Defense Department said in a statement on Friday that the proposed sale will enable Turkey to contribute to NATO missions to preserve regional security and defend NATO allies. It also said the sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
