Argentine soccer star Messi threatened after gun attack on in-laws' supermarket NHK

Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi has been threatened after a supermarket owned by his in-laws was attacked by gunmen. A handwritten message left at the scene said, "Messi, we are waiting for you."

Media reports say two men on motorcycles fired at least 14 shots at the supermarket in Rosario early on Thursday. Nobody was injured in the attack.

Messi lived in the city until he was 13. He led the country's national team to its first victory in 36 years in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year.

The gunmen are suspected to be linked to drug traffickers. Rosario is notorious for drug-related crimes. Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has urged Rosario Mayor Pabro Javkin to tackle rising violent crime.

The incident has shocked Argentina, where Messi is widely revered.
