On September 28, 2025, Yamanobe Town in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan held its first drone race as part of an effort to promote their terraced rice fields, which are among the top 100 in the country. 2. About 30 participants competed with small (less than 100 grams) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that flew along a 500-meter course in the rice fields at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. 3. The event aimed to increase public interest in preserving the scenic rice field landscape, as the aging farming population makes its protection increasingly difficult. Spectators enjoyed live footage captured by cameras on the drones.
