Another 1,300 detained as rioting continues in France NHK

Another 1,300 people have been detained in France amid continued rioting that sprang from protests against the fatal police shooting of a teenager.

Nationwide protests against the police started after the 17-year-old was shot during a traffic stop in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Tuesday.

Officials at the interior ministry say protests continued through Saturday morning, with some turning violent.

It says 1,311 people have been detained around the country, as 45,000 police officers and other personnel are deployed in a bid to restore order.

Local media reports say there were more than 2,500 cases of arson. They say the burned objects include about 230 buildings and over 1,300 cars.

On Saturday, the funeral of the teenager in Nanterre drew a large number of mourners.

The unrest has repercussions for French diplomacy. President Emmanuel Macron asked Germany to postpone his visit to the country that has been scheduled for Sunday through Tuesday.
