In the Ukrainian city of Bucha near the capital Kyiv, a memorial service was held on Saturday to remember the eight people who were killed by Russians one year ago. The ceremony was held at a building on Yablunska Street, which has come to be known as "The Street of the Dead" as corpses of many civilians were found there after Russian forces withdrew. Local officials say that eight men who were caught by Russian troops were hauled to the side of a building and shot dead there on March 4, 2022. The officials say security camera footage and witnesses' accounts confirmed the killings. Mourners offered flowers and candles in front of the wall, where photographs of the dead and Ukrainian flags had been put up. After a prayer, mourners talked of their loved ones who were killed and how they feel. Nataliia Matviychuk, who lost her 37-year-old brother, told NHK that the pain she feels is excruciating and that it will be with her for the rest of her life. She added that everyone has been changed and no one can go back to being who they were before the aggression. The deputy mayor who led the ceremony said that the day is very significant for them and that they want to remember the names of the victims and hope the culprits will be punished. The bodies of over 400 civilians were found in Bucha following the withdrawal of Russian troops from the city. The Ukrainian prosecutors' office and the International Criminal Court are investigating, as some actions by Russian troops may constitute war crimes.
