OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told University of Tokyo students in a Q&amp;A session that the code for its artificial intelligence models will be made open to the public.
                
Altman visited the elite university Monday and spoke with about 30 students. OpenAI is the US-based company behind the ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence service.
                
One student noted the latest version of Chinese generative AI startup DeepSeek is open source, making its code accessible to everyone. The student then asked Altman if OpenAI had any plan to consider similar steps.
                
Altman responded, &quot;We&#039;re going to do it.&quot; He also said he doesn&#039;t know exactly what code will become open or the precise timing. He added it looks like the direction of travel is toward making more open models available.
                
He also said he thinks the company has made good progress in getting its models to be generally safe and robust in open-source uses.
                
Altman said education is an area the company cares about most, in response to a question about how AI can change the industry.
                
He said every student in the world can get a better educational experience. He added that technologies like OpenAI&#039;s can help people learn in whatever their best style is and address whatever their weak points are.
                
Altman said it is hard to imagine what education will be like 100 years later, but said it will be &quot;super different.&quot;
                
One student said she had never thought Altman would come to the university and she was happy with his visit.
She said she is always thinking how to combine AI technology and her own intelligence.
