Russia has opened an annual international economic forum as it continues its invasion of Ukraine. Most participants are from countries that maintain friendly ties with Moscow. The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum began on Wednesday. Business leaders and government officials are taking part in the four-day event featuring more than 140 programs. Many attendees are from China, India and other countries in the Middle East and Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to deliver a speech. Earlier this month, the Kremlin released a message by Putin for the event. In it, he expresses gratitude to Russia's business community for "having done much to overcome the severe consequences of unlawful sanctions." Past forums were attended by leaders of the Group of Seven major economies, including former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and French President Emmanuel Macron. This year, delegates from Western nations are absent for a second straight year due to Russia's invasion. The organizers of the forum have blocked access for journalists from "unfriendly" countries, including the United States, European nations and Japan.
