Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza leaves at least 87 dead or missing NHK

Gaza authorities said at least 87 people were killed or are missing in Saturday's Israeli airstrike on Beit Lahiya in the north of the enclave.

The Israeli forces rejected the report, saying the figures are exaggerated and they are precisely targeting Hamas bases to prevent civilian casualties.

The Israeli military continues its offensives in the enclave even after killing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Wednesday.

In the north, it is carrying out fierce airstrikes with ground troops encircling areas.

More than 5,000 residents in Jabalia, which neighbors Beit Lahiya, were forced to flee their homes.

Israeli continuous military operations are increasing concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland said in a statement on Sunday that he condemns the continuing attacks on civilians.
He also added that this war must end, the hostages held by Hamas must be freed, the displacement of Palestinians must cease, and civilians must be protected wherever they are.

In a related development, Israel said on Sunday that its air force attacked the intelligence headquarters of the Lebanese Shia Muslim group Hezbollah in Beirut.

In response, Hezbollah fired about 100 rockets toward northern Israel, the latest in a recent series of its attacks.
