US and UK forces have attacked targets linked to the Houthi group opposed to Yemen&#039;s government.
                
US President Joe Biden said in a statement Thursday that the joint strikes were successful. He said the actions are in direct response to Houthi assaults against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea, including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles.
                
A senior Biden administration official said, &quot;This action is aimed specifically to disrupt and degrade Houthi capabilities to threaten global trade and freedom of navigation in one of the world&#039;s most critical waterways.&quot; The official also said the attacks targeted missile, radar and unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities.
                
US-based CNN television reported fighter jets and submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles were used in the strikes.
                
The Houthis have repeatedly attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea, saying they support the fight by Hamas against Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
                
US Central Command said the Houthi group launched 27 attacks since November 19 last year, including a ballistic missile attack on Thursday.
                
The joint operation on Thursday was the first time that US forces struck targets used by the Houthi group since the group began attacking international vessels.
                
Last week, the US and 12 other countries including Japan and Britain warned the Houthis, saying they will bear the responsibility of the consequences if they continued the attacks on international vessels.
                
The UN Security Council adopted on Wednesday a resolution which condemned the attacks by Houthis and demanded them to stop at once.
